This year's event will take place on April 12th from 6:30-9:00pm in rooms 117A&B of the International Center. 
This year we are hosting Kevin Danaher of Global Exchange to discuss fair trade and the green economy.  Dr. Danaher is a dynamic speaker who explains how we can create 'grassroots globalization' that develops sustainable local economies.  Don't miss out on this inspiring presentation!
The talk begins at 7:00pm followed by prize drawings and vendor sales by local fair trade, organic, and 'green' retailers.  Free fair trade coffee and refreshments provided!

Meetings will be every Wednesday, starting the 22nd of this month, at 8 'clock, room 106A Berkey Hall.

For the next meeting we'll be watching a documentary about the Fair Trade cotton, coffee, and chocolate movement.

We'll also be discussing our activities for October, special month for Fair Trade.

The keynote speaker is Chris Treter of HIgher Grounds, a coffee company based in Michigan that is "fueled by its social mission and driven by a passion for sourcing the highest quality coffees from around the world."

Higher Grounds has a fierce connection to Fair Trade coffee; not to mention they partner with farmers to make an outstanding blend or five (that I've tasted).

You can have the joy of listening to the music of local singer-songwriter Dan Pechacek!

This bash also features a coffee cupping, a fashion show, lots of vendors with wares to sell (for special prices), raffles, and lots of information for your brains!

Fair Trade Resource Network let's YOU, and by that I mean any group of people, plan a Fair Trade Day for your own town or city during that time. They do this by supplying you with flyers and kits and such.

]]>Mon, 25 Jan 2010 19:04:18 -0800http://www.msufairtrade.com/1/post/2010/01/fair-trade-fundraiser.htmlThis Thursday, January 28th, from 4 to 9 pm, you can head into the Noodles and Company in Okemos (on the corner of Grand River and Marsh Rds) and give them this flier, and along with the delicious meal you will also be receiving the satisfaction of donating 25% of the cost to MSU Students for Fair Trade so that we can keep promoting Fair Trade on behalf of farmers and artisans around the world who need to get their goods to your market ethically, safely, and at a good price. That was a long sentence. So I'll remind you in list form why you should give some money to promote Fair Trade.

Fair Trade is an economic partnership based on dialogue, transparency, and respect. This system of exchange seeks to create greater equity and partnership in the international trading system by:
• Creating opportunities for economically and socially marginalized producers
• Developing transparent and accountable relationships
• Building capacity
• Paying promptly and fairly

Oscar Santillán is the President of his local village of Agato, Ecuador. He has helped preserve the Quichua community through sustainable development, local educational initiatives, musical work, and the building of a local museum for ancient Quichua artifacts.

Oscar and his family come from a long lineage of musicians, healers, and spiritual teachers.

This is a truly amazing man who is a riveting presenter. You'll enjoy yourself AND learn something. It'll be much better than going to see a movie. Promise.

This Saturday Kirabo will be at the Lansing Center for Michigan Power Shift 2009's Fair Trade and Local Market, which runs from October the 9th through 11th. There are some other great activities going on, so check it out; but do make sure you head out there to support fair trade.


Also, Gail from Kirabo needs some volunteers to help her out at the stand for an hour or so on Saturday. Call Kirabo at (517) 337-8000 or email kirabo@att.net to get in touch and help out. It's a lot of fun, I promise.
